History
Amsterdam was given city rights either in 1300 or 1306 and flourished during the 14th century because of the trade with Hanseatic League. In the 16th century, the Dutch rebelled against Spain which was then ruled by Phillip II. One of the reasons for this rebel was because of new tax imposition and persecution of Protestants by newly imposed Inquisition. The start of this revolt escalated into 80 years of war ultimately leading to Dutch Independence. Because of the revolt leader William, the Silent Amsterdam was recognized for its religious tolerance which led to many communities like Jews, Huguenots, and many other religious refugees to find safety in Amsterdam. The 17th century is considered as the Golden Period in Amsterdam’s history when it became the wealthiest city in the western world. Because of the Dutch Republic wars with England and France, the prosperity hit and it declined in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, with a renewed effort the city is once again one of the prosperous cities of Europe.
