About Fuzhou

If you’re looking to take a break from the typical tourist destinations, but yet have a pleasant holiday, look no further than Fuzhou. It is the capital of the Fujian province and one of the largest cities there.

Situated to the east of Fujian, Fuzhou is on the north bank of Min River’s estuary, Fujian’s largest river. As per Brookings Institution, globally it is one of the rapidly growing metropolitan areas. It is the political, cultural and economic center of the Fujian province.

Fuzhou, which means City With Good Luck in Chinese gets its name from Mount Futo, a mountain that lies to its northwest. The city changed names multiple times under different rules but finally settled on Fuzhou. Interestingly, the city is also called Rongcheng, literal translation, The Banyan City, to honor the Song Dynasty that planted many banyans in the area during their reign.

With a history of more than 2,000 years, the city is a good mix of the old and the new. On one side, you have all the historical sites and on the other, you have all the skyscrapers.

With Fuzhou’s climate remaining constant most of the year, you won’t be in for any surprises. The climate here is categorized as humid subtropical.

Being one of the first Chinese treaty ports opened up Fuzhou to Western missionaries and traders. This could be one of the reasons why Fuzhou is very distinct from the other inland regions of China in terms of their culture.

Tip: When in Fuzhou, be sure to catch up on Min Opera, alternatively known as Fuzhou drama, which will give you some insight into their folk tales, ancient legends, and historic novels.
